Communications Internship RI College

Entry 1: Jan. 30. 2009

WPRI-12 is great. I thoroughly enjoyed my first week there, and I feel that it's a perfect fit. Thus far, everyone seems to be very easy-going, laid-back, and friendly, which makes for a comfortable learning environment. I've been able to shadow a few reporters and do quite a bit of hands-on work, which is extremely beneficial to gaining an in-depth look into the field as a future profession. I have long been interested in broadcast journalism & producing, and I know that with my quick-pace learning style, I believe I'll do just fine in this field.
I'm grateful for all the new contacts I've made there in this first week alone, along with the renewal of those I previously had at the station.
I look forward to week 2!

Eyewitness News-12 is the news to watch in Providence!
Holla!

Entry 2/Week 2: Feb. 8. 2009

This week was more low key @ the station, but still interesting just the same. I shadowed an associate producer for most of the two days this week---in the control room with the producers & directors during the 5, 530, 6 and 11pm newscasts---during which I watched Candace (AP) operate the prompter while observing the producers and directors simultaneously.
Other than that, I helped out at the assignment desk and attended a daily meeting with the producers on Monday- during which I contributed my own story idea.
Laid back week for me, yet cool.
I dig it.

Entry 3/Week 3: Feb. 11. 2009

Well I must be honest. I have a very different tone today, then I had 3 weeks ago.

This week has me re-thinking my interest in the news field as a whole.

I am no longer being stimulated by anything that's going on at the station, and frankly, I think I'm too intelligent to limit myself to a field that is so boring, at least in this market.

I am surprised that the station even has an internship program, because there's no structure to the program, nor are there any people employed there that are willing to let interns utilize any resources that may teach us ANYTHING about how to write, edit, or shoot anything.

SO, it was another week of observing, answering phones, and once again going out with a reporter, to watch her do her job.

Yes, it's beneficial to be observing the field, but it's not beneficial to be doing nothing.

In short: It's WACK!

Entry 4: Weeks 4 & 5

Week 4, I was out of the station due to severe bronchitis/asthma complications. (Feb. 16-22)

Week 5: (Feb. 26-March 1st) At this point, I have completed 1/3rd of the internship (41 hours total) at WPRI-12. This week was rather uneventful again, except that I suggested I be able to shadow the photog covering the PC game against PITT- which resulted in PC's upset of the country's #1 team with their win over PITT Tuesday night. As a media rep, I was able to participate in the press conferences with the PC seniors, and both Keno Davis and PITT coach Nixon, as well as move about the Dunkin Donuts Center in a privileged manner while making use of the media room downstairs and/or other things etc.

Entry 5: Week 6 (March 2-8)
Hours Completed to Date: 47.5 hrs

Not much happening. I was sick Mon. March 2nd, so I was only in on Tuesday March 3rd.
During my shift I accompanied Alex DiPrato and photog Matt to the Attleboro City Hall for the Lofton kid's tribute- from state and city officials for bravely calling 911 during his father's accident at home. Other than that---assignment desk....enough said.

Today's Date: 3.24.09

Entry 8: (March 16-22) & (March 23-29)
Hours completed to date: 72 hrs....By tonight: 77.5 hours

(March 16-22): BORING. I didn't do anything worth writing about.
Rotted at the assignment desk, watched Nneka Nwosu edit a story for an hour---escaped to Engineering and chilled with Emily & watched her take feeds from the live trucks.......and FINALLY practiced writing 20 sec. VOs.
BUT overall, BORINNNNNNG.

(March 23-29) BORING AGAIN....except I decided to say PEACE to the newsroom, and now I can hang out in Engineering whenever I want!
Last night I took pkg feeds from the live trucks myself, and uploaded them into the show. Piece of cake!

Tonight, I'm gonna go hang with Josh in Graphics & Jeff in audio. Forget that WACK newsroom!

This week (April 6-12): 93 today....99Hrs Total

Last week: I spent all my time in the engineering side of the station again.....much better!
Took pkgs from live trucks/ Uploaded & sent pkgs to videotape (made ins & outs) etc....
Entered the Daily NUMBERS & Wild Money Live @ 6:59pm and 7:27pm....

Shadowed TD Laura and all producers during all newscasts, as well as Chyron Graphics operators.
MUCH BETTER week than previous.

Today: April 6th
-Just finished another 5 hrs, bringing me to 93 Hrs tonight....by tmr, I'll be at 99 Hrs Total.
HALLELUJAH!!! Can I get an "Amen?" hahahahaaha!

Today they actually put me to work and let me do something on my own!!! HOLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

I prompted the 5, 530, & 6pm newscasts! An AP supervised me during the 5 & 530 shows, but he left me alone to handle the 6pm. show, which I did just FABULOUSLY, if I don't say so myself! Yeah! hahahahaaha.

Wellll....I'll write more manana.

Peace & hairgrease!

It's April 20th, and I'm in my last week @ the station.

Last week (April 13-19th) my cummulative hours were 107.5 hours.
I shadowed Jeff (audio operator) during the 5, 530 and 6pm newscasts, and went out with a reporter and photog for an interview with a Tax Tea Party rep., and to do a live shot during the 11 oclock newscast.

This week I will be putting in 12. 5 hours to finish out the internship.

Happy to bring this course, semester, and undergrad college experience to a rapid close!

Peace & Hair Grease!
